Ibiza – the island of atmosphere

Overlooking Cala Llentrisca

I’ve been told by numerous friends that Ibiza is incomparable to anything you’ve ever experienced before.

I was surprised by the passion and enthusiasm they all had for this place, but none of them could really nail down and agree on the “what” that made it so special. Perhaps it was the night-life (obviously needs a mention) or the chilled out beaches? The one thing they did manage to agree on was the atmosphere.

Can an island have an atmosphere? I always thought it would be very personal depending on the area you stayed in and the places you went and the people you were with.

There were no shortages of recommendations as everyone seemed determined to convert me a to lifetime Ibiza lover. I was sceptical to say the least. I spent numerous summers in my teens on Greek party islands and I have to say, they all blend into one. I thought I had it all figured out; endless nights hopping from bars to clubs, a gyros before bed then mammoth hangovers spent lunching on feta salads (healthy!) and trying to rehydrate on the beaches whilst tanning. I couldn’t imagine how Ibiza would be any different.

So when I was invited to visit Ibiza with some great friends (who had also never been before) I obviously said yes. You only live once right.

I did have my reservations, since I am no longer a teen and my ideal night out consists of dinner then cocktails somewhere (I haven’t pulled an ‘all-nighter’ for at least half a decade!) However on doing my own research (see my article on that here) which can be overwhelming, there seems to be a lot more than partying that the island had to offer.

Since we both work all day and teach at our gym all night, our sanity tends to suffer. Although we wanted the “official Ibiza experience” and were determined to stay out past 1 am, it was essential to schedule in some time to recharge.

So we went in search of the ultimate escape. A long weekend that encompassed the hard-core partying AND some peace and tranquillity.
